What is a Mobile App?
Mobile Apps or simply Apps, are applications written to run on Mobile Devices such as smart phones and tablets. These Apps are usually tailored to a specific task, keeping the application size small and making the applications easy to use.
Mobile Apps are prevalent among many different devices and platforms including, iPhones and iPads, Android Phones and Tablets, Blackberry's and Playbooks, and Windows Mobile phones.
Each device and platform present there own strengths and weaknesses, generally however Mobile Apps can be split into two categories, Web Apps and Native Apps.
Web Apps Vs. Native Apps
Web Apps can be written to run from a web browser delivered via the internet. These applications use server-side and/or client-side code to provide an application-like experience. Development costs are usually lower and the program can be deployed much faster.
Native Apps are installed locally to the devices storage and run utilizing the devices OS environment. The benefit here is that a Native App can usually gain access to system resources (camera, etc.) that is not possible through Web Apps. They are also optimized to run better as they by pass the requirements a browser makes on the system as it interprets the application. Native apps usually have higher development costs as they can utilize more features of the device. Deploying a Native App can also take longer depending on the platform.
